Turning knowledge gaps into e-learning

Winter Driving course on laptop

E-learning has seen huge growth in the past five years and has become a popular way of training and changing behaviour, with users able to access learning where and when they like. The multi-media aspect of e-learning appeals to different learning styles and makes it easier for people to integrate their learning and revisit points to embed their understanding.

TSO has created a portfolio of e-learning and test yourself apps for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

The challenge

Research commissioned by Isuzu revealed that almost three-quarters (73%) of drivers feel worried or anxious about driving in wintry, icy or cold conditions. This follows research by Jaguar Land Rover in 2024 that found that nearly a fifth of drivers were unaware that dirt, ice and other obstructions reduce the effectiveness of advanced systems, such as autonomous emergency braking and reversing collision detection.

To help to address these issues, TSO proposed a concept of a new Winter Driving e-learning product to add to the DVSA Safe Driving for Life website.

The solution

TSO’s publishing team collated and curated information on driving in winter conditions from across the existing DVSA portfolio, including Driving Essential Skills, Better Driving and other sources of approved content. The team identified the learning objectives for the course, story boarded and developed the content, curating imagery, designing assets and creating test yourself questions and self-reflection scenarios.

To ensure the course is accessible to as many users as possible a voiceover feature is available.

Users can access the course on desktop, mobile device or tablet. The course includes sections on journey planning and vehicle maintenance, as well as tips and advice for driving in wet, snowy and icy conditions.

The result

TSO’s Publishing Manager, David Bryan says “The Winter driving e-learning course demonstrates that TSO can repurpose existing content, make it more engaging and fulfil a user need all within a tight timescale. The whole course - from initial concept to publication – took less than a month and has had very positive feedback from our customers.”

Customers have said:

“Lots of really good tips/information to raise awareness of how we should prepare for adverse weather conditions when needing to drive. A lot of new drivers will be unaware of this and would benefit from completing the course either before or after passing their driving test.”

“Very easy, informative e-learning experience with lots of great tips/advice for ALL drivers. Drivers are all too guilty of becoming complacent after years of driving and adapt poor driving habits. Constant reminders need to be given to re-enforce the dangers of driving in poor weather conditions.”

The Official DVSA Guide to Winter Driving e-learning course is available through Safe Driving for Life and is priced at £3.60 for 30 days access.
