The British Pharmacopoeia 2009 is legally effective in the UK from 1 January 2009

The British Pharmacopoeia 2009 is effective in the UK from 1 January 2009.

Since 1864, the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) has been providing authoritative official standards for pharmaceutical substances and medicinal products. Published annually, and used in over 100 countries worldwide, the BP contains over 3,200 monographs for pharmaceutical substances, formulated preparations and other articles used in the practice of medicine.

Published by The Stationery Office (TSO) on behalf of the British Pharmacopoeia Secretariat, part of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the British Pharmacopoeia makes an important contribution to protecting public health by setting publicly available standards for the quality of medicines.

The BP 2009 contains extensive revisions and legally enforceable standards which all medicinal products supplied to or sold into the UK must meet. The BP is an essential reference for anyone involved in pharmaceutical research and development, manufacture, testing and regulation.

New to the BP 2009 are 44 monographs for formulated preparations including veterinary medicines and additional standards for widely used unlicensed formulations. All European Pharmacopoeia 6th edition material up to and including Supplement 6.2 is integrated into the text of the BP 2009.

In addition to the expanding number of monographs for licensed formulated products, the BP supports the regulatory work in the fields of herbal and complementary medicines by providing new and revised monographs for herbal medicinal products and for homeopathic stocks and mother tinctures.

The print edition of the BP 2009 comprises four volumes of the BP 2009 and a single volume of the BP (Veterinary) 2009. A single user licence to the BP 2009 CD-ROM and single user licence to the online version are also provided as part of the print package.

The online version of the BP 2009, pharmacopoeia.co.ukopens in new window, has seen continuous development since its launch and recent changes make accessing information even easier. New additions include an A-Z listing of monographs and articles and improved searching to include ‘did you mean?’ and other close matches. A new and personalised ‘My BP’ area makes searching for the information you use regularly easier and more efficient.

In 2008 the BP was released for the first time as an eBook, the first pharmacopoeia worldwide to be made available in this format. The BP 2009 is again available as an eBook and contains the complete contents of the BP print edition including diagrams and charts.

The BP 2009 eBook is exclusively available to those customers who have already purchased the hard copy of the British Pharmacopoeia.

The BP 2009 print edition (including CD-ROM and online package) is priced at £795 (£814.88 inc VAT), and the BP 2009 eBook is priced at £398 (£457.70 inc VAT) to those who have purchased the 2009 print edition.
