The earthquake and subsequent tsunami of December 2004 killed 300,000 people, injured many more and displaced or affected another 1.6 million. The Department for International Development responded promptly and the Government committed £75 million in humanitarian assistance, of which £64.1 million has now been spent, either directly or through grants to third parties. Based on a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (ISBN 010293715X) and memoranda from the Department, this report looks at the Department's reaction to the tsunami and subsequent action to ensure that the monies were well spent.
